Formatting Editor
What in the world is a Format Editor?
Have you ever looked inside a book, and noticed the font helps to set the tone? How about the lines laid out before you… leading you to the door of your imagination, and igniting anticipation for the story to begin? Books have a magic all of their own, outside from the stories they hold. Their smell, the feel of the paper in between your fingertips, the layout enticing you follow the lines like well worn pathways, the font itself creating an atmosphere before the words are even read… All of this happens on a subliminal level, preparing the reader to be transported through space and time. Welcome to format editing, where style meets function.
In a digital world where eBooks are available on any reading device, the format editor has to expand their wheelhouse beyond print. Style and function still have roles to play; however. understanding how to remove hidden coding, using H1-H6, bookmarked TOCs, templates, and the conversion ratio for various eReader sizes vs. using tabs, and pressing enter instead of utilizing page breaks, can make or break a digital manuscript.
Today’s format editor, has to be a Jack-of-all-trades finding a home somewhere between a programmer, graphic designer, copy editor, and typographer.
